Book: 1 Peter

1 Peter 1:3; Luke 24:13-35

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth
into a LIVING HOPE through the RESURRECTION OF JESUS CHRIST from the dead.
A. The loss of hope – Luke 24:21 [Jesus draws near – Luke 24:15b]
a. To people who struggled to accept the things that have happened – Luke 24:18
1. Why would Jesus allow what has happened in your life?
2. Why wouldn’t Jesus answer your prayer when you prayed?
[Behind every unbelief, there is often a painful question: If Jesus is really EMANUEL – God with us,
then why did He allow this to happen?]
b. To people who have been let down by religion and religious leaders – Luke 24:20
1. Has religion let you down?
2. Have religious leaders let you down or they have betrayed your trust?
[Because you’ve been betrayed by religion and religious leaders, you’ve lost hope]
c. To people who are confused by other believers – Luke 24:22 – 24
1. You’ve listened to other believers talking about their experience, but nothing of such has ever
happened to you.
2. Several believers have told you how God speaks to them, but you’ve done everything similar, but
you’ve never heard God speaks.
[Because of all these confusions, you’ve concluded that this faith thing is not for you]
B. The return of hope – Luke 24:26 [Jesus Identifies and diagnoses the problem – Luke 24:25]
[According to Jesus, the reason why you feel hopeless is because you are slow of heart to believe]
C. The response of hope – Jesus focuses the attention on Himself – Luke 24:27 [Isaiah 53; Hosea 6:2]
1. The Bible says that Jesus will be pierced for our transgression
2. The Bible says that Jesus will be crushed for our inequities
3. The Bible says that the punishment that will bring us peace will be upon Jesus
4. The Bible says that by the wounds of Jesus, you will be healed
D. What is your Decision? Jesus Provokes a Decision – Luke 24:28-29 [will you let Jesus stay or you
will let Him go?]
Conclusion: In the story of the two disciples on the road to Emmaus the Risen Jesus brings new hope to
two people who have lost all hope. For me, the question is: Do you believe God? Not do you believe IN
God? Hope is found in ONE PERSON ONLY – HIS NAME IS JESUS
