Scriptures: John 7:37-39; Ezekiel 47:1-12
Introduction: The Tragedy of the Sleeping Believer
Imagine a person sleeping soundly right next to a roaring, thunderous waterfall. It seems impossible, yet this is exactly how many Christians live their lives. We sit in church week after week, completely surrounded by the infinite, roaring Grace of God, while our hearts remain spiritually asleep.
We have traded a wild, life-giving relationship with God for a comfortable, dry routine called religion. Religion tells us to stay safely on the dry shoreline where we are in control. But Jesus stands up and calls out a provocative wake-up call to anyone who is tired of the desert.
- The Subjects: The Thirsty Ones
“On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, ‘If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink.'” — John 7:37
IT IS NOT YOUR JOB TO PERSUADE JESUS TO FILL YOU.
Truth: Religion tells you that you have to beg, plead, and prove your worthiness before God will look your way. But Jesus points us back to the reality of Matthew 5:6—those who hunger and thirst shall be filled.
The Wake-Up: The only qualification to receive the filling of God is to be empty and thirsty. Stop trying to convince a loving Father to give you what He has already bought for you on the cross. Grace is not earned; it is simply received by those who admit they are thirsty.
- The Source: Jesus Christ
“He brought me back to the door of the temple; and there was water, flowing from under the threshold toward the east…” — Ezekiel 47:1
HOLINESS IS NOT THE WAY TO JESUS CHRIST, BUT JESUS CHRIST IS THE WAY TO HOLINESS.
The Truth: This is the ultimate divide between religion and Grace. Religion says, “Clean yourself up, become holy, and maybe you can reach Jesus.” Grace says, “Come to Jesus, and He will make you holy.”
The Strong’s Insight: If you open your Strong’s Concordance, the word for holiness or sanctification in the Greek is hagiasmos (G38). It is a process that belongs entirely to God’s power, not human effort. As 1 Corinthians 1:30 declares, Christ Jesus became our righteousness, holiness, and redemption. Our holiness is a backward-looking reality achieved by Jesus on the cross, not a forward-looking target we reach by behaving.
3. The Stream: The Holy Spirit
“He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” — John 7:38
THE HOLY SPIRIT IS NOT GIVEN TO KEEP YOU SAFE; HE IS GIVEN TO MAKE YOU DANGEROUS.
The Truth: Religion wants to turn the Holy Spirit into a private, indoor blanket—something meant only to comfort us and keep us cozy while we sleep. But in John 7:38, the Greek word for rivers is potamoi (G4215), meaning rushing torrents, floods, or raging streams.
The Lesson of Ezekiel 47: In Ezekiel’s vision, the water keeps getting deeper—from ankle-deep, to knee-deep, to waist-deep, until it is a river too deep to walk in. You cannot contain a raging river into a quiet, sleepy puddle. This Stream is designed to aggressively rush out, slam into the dead places of our world, and force them to come to life!
A Warning from Verse 11:
Ezekiel 47:11 notes that the river of God is flowing, bringing dead things to life. But the text says the swamps and marshes stay salty. Why? Because a marsh is where water goes to sit still. A marsh is water that is asleep.
Church, this is the danger of a stagnant faith. Some of us want just enough of God’s grace to form a comfortable puddle around our lives, but we don’t want the rushing current of the Holy Spirit to move us. If you try to contain the Holy Spirit into a small, stagnant pool of your own control, you will evaporate into a bitter, salty marsh. The Stream is not a swimming pool for you to sit in; it is a river meant to sweep you away!
The Final Takeaway
Stop trying to manage God from the shoreline of religion. Wake up, step into the deep end of His unearned Grace, and drink deeply from the Stream that never runs dry.
Conclusion:
- The Subjects (The Thirsty): It is not your job to persuade Jesus to fill you (Matthew 5:6).
- The Source (Jesus): Holiness is not the way to Jesus Christ, but Jesus Christ is the way to Holiness (1 Corinthians 1:30/Hebrews 10:10/ Ephesians 2:8-10).
- The Stream (The Holy Spirit): The Holy Spirit is not given to keep you safe; He is given to make you dangerous (John 7:38 / Ezekiel 47).
